The evidence isn't much more than a collection of anecdotes, but the recent Lindsay Shepherd/Jessica Yaniv incident is a fairly good representation of Twitter's progressive bias. The two in question got into an online spat that devolved into mean spirited insults - Jessica took a dig at Lindsay's diseased uterus and Lindsay fired back "at least I have a uterus, you ugly man". Because Yaniv is trans, this qualified as grounds for a permanent ban for Shepherd while Yaniv went un-reprimanded.

I don't use Twitter, so I don't have a dog in the fight, but I do not find the "you're free to start your own platform" to be particularly compelling retort. Twitter is the synonymous with up to the second breaking news and is used for everything from world leader statements to emergency broadcasts -- it's in murky waters between a public forum and a private service. Twitter itself can ultimately get fucked but we've already seen banks and payment services adopt this "well technically you don't have a RIGHT to our services" and cut off customers on ideological grounds, so I can't pretend their decisions don't have some societal impact.

Mostly I just hate myself for getting involved in this debate in the first place.

But if you are a "free speech absolutist" like Ant claimed to be (which he's absolutely not), your defense of freedom of speech should extend beyond the 1st amendment, which protects a lot of your rights to free speech but not all. Things that are not protected by the 1st amendment (like defamation) are a free speech issue even if not a 1st amendment issue.
