He joined FNM two albums in and emulated the style of their previous singer. He has formed about a dozen bands (half of them more interesting than anything Tool has done since 2001) with the money he made from a few years in FNM. And unlike Maynard, his bands don't just sound like less interesting versions of his biggest band.
He's also an infinitely better singer than Maynard, and doesn't need to throw a bunch of industrial effects over his voice to make it listenable.

A dozen bands? I've only heard of one. I YouTubed his other bands, and you've got to be fucking kidding me. They stink! Maynard's other bands, most noticably A Perfect Circle, are platinum selling, Grammy winning bands. And Mike Patton has Mr. Jingles...cool.

Let's not pretend Tool has ever had the energy or stage presence of bands like Metallica, Slipknot, or Pantera. Maynard hangs out behind a curtain being fucking weird. But this album is considerably slower and less energy than their previous works.
