Who was luckier to have met the other, Opie or Anthony?

I would probably say Anthony just because Opie was already in radio and would be doing some milquetoast show, like what he was always trying to turn O and A into. Anthony would probably be swinging a hammer or doing backup vocals for Joey and the leeches.

Anthony because he would still be knocking tin. Opie would have had some moderate success in a tiny market.

tits' career pre-Anthony was an absolute fucking embarrassment. he had a tiny established audience, most of whom probably didn't stick around when the show actually became funny, and Anthony joined on that basis. plenty of guys were 'in radio' for Anthony to exploit - Opie just happened to be that vehicle/launchpad/eventual liability

Lets not forget Anthony had a shitty marriage. Radio was his only way out of that too

Jim Nordon, obviously.

Brother Joe.

Who's luckier, Jouseph Kumiya or the legion of orphan children he's sponsored over the years with his sexually-gratifying habit of ingesting their saliva?

Anthony, because Opie was already in radio.

Opie because Ant would have teamed up with any number of guys. Remember, Ant was actively trying to get an on air job with his talents.

Opie claims he was looking for a co-host around the time Ant sent his song in, so I'll have to go with Ant. If Ant hadn't come along, some other desperate loser who can do wacky voices would have, and Ope would have attached himself to that person instead.

Opie. Anthony would have been fine as a tin knocker.

Opie. You can make more money as a contractor than Long Island radio.

I'd rather make less money in an air conditioned studio doing prep burger bits inbetween pre approved song blocks than doing hard manual labor for a few more grand a year.

Most people on this sub don't dig as far back as WNEW, but back in April 2002 Ant was telling the story of how he got into radio with Ope, and what he said (or how he said it) speaks to your point.

Unlike recent shows when Ant tells the stories with a strange mix of anger & cheerful humor, in '02 you could hear the sheer gratitude in his tone when he describes how grateful he is to his brother Joe for "standing outside WBAB for 2 hours" waiting to hand his audition tape to Ope. Ant had the courtesy to admit "if it weren't for Joe doing that, I'd still be knocking tin today."

So, Joe Cumia has the distinction of being one of the highest paid human beings who ever walked the Earth: Millions of dollars in compensation for standing around for 2 hours. (I mean, what else has he really done to earn a living?)

I'm confused by the downvotes. Opie has always been a talentless nothing, while Anthony used to be very funny. Opie never would have gone anywhere, and Anthony could have been picked up elsewhere. It's not like he wasn't shopping around the greater NY radio market.

But do you think he would have lasted long enough to have a career or would he have O.D'ed/been arrested if he didn't have the structure of a radio job?

Could be, but it also seems like being in radio didn't make Anthony any more temperate over time.
