I trick or treated in Milwaukee for many years and I explicitly remember one year, a man gave out excerpts of his book instead of candy and begged us to ask our parents for money to buy his book. I am almost certain that man was Patrick

He was always very nice to us kids. But he didn't give candy, he just had printed pamphlets with some of his writing. I remember he gave me one a couple years in a row, so we didn't go to his house after that. And he would always invite us to come inside and see his toy collection, and said that he had candy for us if we just came down to the basement with him. He would always tell us he kept full sized snickers and butterfingers down there and that we should come see. I never did because I knew better than to do that but I remember one time this younger kid Billy that trick or treated with us accepted his offer. We told him he shouldn't go in, as us older kids knew about stranger danger.

I didn't know Billy very well because he was about 3 years younger than me but he played with us sometimes. But after that Halloween he went to Patricks basement, I didn't see Billy around anymore. He didn't come play with us again. In fact now that I think about it, he was very different from then on. He used to be friendly and outgoing but he became shy and withdrawn. He seemed very disturbed, and rarely spoke to anyone. He'd often weep for no reason in school and he always looked scared, like he'd seen a ghost or something. I have always wondered if Patrick had anything to do with it.
