Does joe pay ascap for his cosplay bands when he makes money outside club gigs? He seems to be posting himself playing covers at gigs where they probably don’t have the rights to the music. Pretty sure restaurants and plastic bag conventions don’t pay.

restaurants I worked at paid fees to play recorded music (cds or pandora or whatever). Does that cover live music too?

Yes it does. I have played in many clubs that insist on “no covers” by the bands, so they won’t have to pay BMI/ASCAP fees.
BMI actually hires people to go into bars and restaurants to audit the music that is playing and report back to them. Not sure about ASCAP.
Someone with more interest and energy than I have should pursue this angle.
