Way to gradually introduce your readers to the complications of your fictional universe, stupid.

There's no character or species development to be found in this book. At least through chapter 9.

One's a 17 year old girl (of course it's a child) who's pissed off at everything but you have no idea why. Then there's a race that attacked Earth so there's supposed to be tension between races but it's never fleshed out. I couldn't care less about any of these characters and they all speak with the same voice, presumably Patrick's.

If I can be bothered I'm going to buy it and give it a read this weekend. I'm sure it's even worse than I imagine. Good job getting through 9 chapters.

It's just boring as shit. He's definitely taken the approach of modern day pulp sci-fi where you flood the story with snarky street wise alternative characters and completely forgettable alien races that are mentioned once in a joke reference that means nothing to the reader since they know nothing of said race. Some authors can get away with this approach if they can write well or can be legitimately funny. Patrick falls short on both accounts, obviously.

It's formulaic as hell and it's a shitty formula.

The human paused and said accusingly,

"We never were happy with your kind after you invaded Earth, child"

The ballsaxian looked up from his 11th SPA (space pale ale) in order to reply,

"Blaming all of us for the actions of a few reminds me of the fascist leaders who used to rule on your planet, child"

It was truly terrible. He had to say "she was hungry" like 4 different times in 4 different ways within the first few pages.

Observe "ants_ccw_permit," speaking as if she's giving an honest review of my book when it's common knowledge her kind can't read. You're not fooling anyone, child.
