Anthony shit on him 24/7 behind his back. The irony is that most of the criticism that came from Jimmy and Anthony was that Opie was first of all, paranoid, and secondly, unfunny. The man wasn’t paranoid. He was right. These guys were talking about him behind his back constantly. As for the unfunny part? Opie himself said he was never the funniest guy in the room. He interfered sometimes, but look at how hopeless they both are without him. I will take a high failure rate if the small success rate is still good enough to make me millions. And they stabbed him in the back.

Let me preface this with the fact that I dont hate opie. His persistence is the reason I had a great show to listen to for years. The only thing I never liked about him was his jealousy towards Howard and he let that get in the way of keeping the show going. To me, his grudge is the cause for a lot of his issues.

He might have been stabbed in the back but they had a good show and he returned the favor for not fighting to get ant back. Regardless of your feelings, he should have done more about it, if not for ant, for the fans.

We cringe at a lot of the bits and features that are dated now and were always corny, but those were the bits that helped transition new listeners into their type of show. You don’t take people who are used to morning zoo crew humor and only throw “cunt! fuck! shit! vagina!” at them at 6 o’clock in the morning. Can you how to structure a show. Anthony can’t set up bits on his own, he’s constantly giving away the punchline. It felt like a real broadcast with Opie in charge.For as bad as he was, they needed him. They criticize him for needlessly starting fights with other shows, but those were the types of broadcasts that built fan loyalty. I’m sure it was subconscious on his part, but it was brilliant.

I never said they didn't need him. He was a great board op. The issue I have is how he needed them as much as they needed him and he turned his back on them almost immediately. He was upset at ant for the divorce because of his wife, he couldn't handle the fact that Jim and ant became better friends even though opie brought Jim on, and he hated how he could never be the funny guy. He should have sucked it up and kept the show going for the fans that were the reason he is a millionaire. He couldn't admit he was one third of the issue until fans turned on Jim and ant. Once that happened, he admitted his fault and then went to trashing them. He got off easy but I still like the dude because I got many laughs due to his foresight into talent

Even with brotherman love going on here that's sugar coating it a bit. It's almost statistically impossible how few times he actually said something funny over that many years on a comedy show. But he definitely I think had a better idea of what the audience wanted to hear. He didn't use the show for his own wants like Jimmy with the porn whores and celeb photos and Ant with the politics/race rants. The things that ultimately ruined the show had nothing to do with him.

What i never understood was that the "Nopie day" radio shows were some of the funniest radio jim and ant did. But without opie, both their podcast/shows fucking stink.
