You're right. People wanted to see foot soldiers in track suits beating up shop owners in broad daylight, more than they wanted a look into the sub conscious. They didn't understand it or found it "slow". I believe Anthony falls into this category.
Totally, critics used to call those types of Sopranos fans the “tits and hits” crowd. I can’t imagine just watching it for that stuff and wanting to skip through all the cool artsy aspects of it. And I say that as someone who counts Paulie as his favorite character.
