He turned begging for a laugh into an art. If you're laughing at his basic boomer jokes it means he's funny, if you don't laugh it means you voted for Obama. It couldn't possibly mean that the joke wasn't that funny. Then his audience laughs nervously because they want to make it absolutely clear they are not Democrats which means he never gets any feedback and thus never feels the need to improve his joke. It's ironic that he was so ahead of his time on tough crowd politics wise, yet is so behind the times comedy wise.
