So a half a dozen. Commonly that's written out as half dozen or half-dozen. According to Garner's Modern American Usage, "half a dozen" should be avoided.

Now that we have the phrasing out of the way, let's look at what he's trying to describe. If the six (plus himself, so seven total) is consiting of "white guys, black guys, and Hispanic guys" (emphasis mine) he's saying that there were multiples of each ethnic origin. Doing the math, that's exactly 2 of each.

There were 6 white guys, 6 black guys, and 6 Hispanic guys. So, to get this one car out of a snow bank, nineteen people (6x3 + 1) showed up with shovels to help one car out of the snowbank. I live in a densely populated area of houses where everyone shovels their own sidewalk/driveway. At no time in the dead of winter have I been in eyesight of 18 other people shoving, much less specific groups of ethnicity (I also live in a multi-ethnic neighborhood).
