It's a good substitute for white sugar along with honey, but they both are basically liquid sugar and carbs. People like to say that "natural sugars" are good for you, but they're still sugars that your body will store if they aren't burned off. They may have vitamins and shit, but imagine taking a sugary vitamin pill, that's about it
