I'll tell you something about heaps of Australians: It's a national past time -- almost as popular as cricket -- to look down your nose at the bible thumping, gun toting American. It is so fucking infuriating because it really is -- and I don't say this often -- a stupid type of ill informed bigotry. Most people here don't know shit about average Americans and consume mostly American culture but still fucking shit on the country. It's educated people as well.
It's one of the most annoying things about Australia for me.
I think what the left seems to ignore when they claim the NRA is pulling the strings of politicians and if we could just get rid of it the gun lobby would diminish is that the NRA, if it stopped existing today, would be started in one form or another tomorrow. Why? Because there's a genuine grass roots culture of weaponry in America? Don't they have millions of individual members?
It's actually one of the only authentic lobbies in the country that enjoys popular support unlike many of the other one's that are top down phenomenons.
Australians on the whole are quite leftist. Even though burgers have become a shadow of their former selves, the USA was created on the back of pioneers and people who detested big government. This is one reason why Aussies just can't wrap their heads around gun ownership. They don't have that pioneering fortitude - Australia wasn't built as a bastion of freedom. It isn't in their history nor in their blood. As a result, you'll constantly hear "I just don't understand why they elected the Orange Man" and "what's the deal with Americans and guns?" from Aussies. At the very least, Australia is (not yet) as fucked as the UK.
