His brain slips up, because he's talking so fast with his bullshit he's making up on the spot in an attempt to sound superior, as it realizes the magnitude of the obvious lie he's about to say (and knowing he's being recorded and going to end up on here) and likely come back to haunt him. This was his brain's natural attempt to stop him from saying something monumental stupid. Yet, despite it's best efforts, Joe managed to override his instinct and continued with his poorly thought out lie.

Why analyze one sentence? The dumb fuck couldn't form a coherent thought throughout the whole debacle. He asked the girl who was protesting his brother out to coffee for fuck's sake.
