Twain published the book but Grant wrote it all himself and at some points would write up to 50 pages in a day despite being in terrible health from throat cancer. I'm not sure how quickly the average professional writer might typically write in a day but Shelby Foote who wrote a 3000 page, 3 volume history of the Civil War would write around 500 words per day by hand with and it took him like 20 years to finish the whole thing.
