I'm pretty sure Dave Smith's insecurities got him to convince Lauren that Jim was crossing a line and she should be uncomfortable. I think Jim is a creep but he does have a long history of keeping these girls around him and never actually even trying anything even when any normal guy would. I think Dave saw that Rock video and the Rock mentioning Lauren by name and thought oh fuck, I'm getting outclassed here.
