Oi I got raped when me was 12

I wish I had his wife.

I’m US born but lived abroad in Europe as a kid and returned to the NYC area in high school, and I recall this film making 80’s NYC and the US look like a decadent, coke-fueled hellscape for this noble white savage to charm and conquer. Maybe I’m mixing it up with the sequel, which I’m sure CQ could have perfected, but I swear, it was kind of pro-Aussie, though maybe in a super surface way..

That's actually a really good take and I hadn't thought about it like that.

Thanks. To add to that, Crocadile Dundee was significant for its time for being a relatively low budget production that made 10+x box office, which in 1986 was kind of a freak thing.

One of my university classmate’s father was an early investor in Outback Steakhouse, from 1988. The guy made a mint. Complete cultural appropriation of an imagined Aussie culture from some 27 year old Tampa jocks, riding the wave of that movie’s popularity.

Good for him. Speaking of that Paul Hogan obviously made a bundle but got embroiled in a tax controversy but the way the press presented it always bugged me. There was a lot of personal resentment during the time and I think it was based upon resentment over what he represented. It reminds me of how the went after Martha Stewart for that ridiculous 'stock tip' thing. They resented her for portraying the type of Americana they secretly -- or not so secretly anymore -- despise.

I didn’t know that about PH, but Martha totally got railroaded at a time when everyone on Wall St was doing the same thing. Total con.

If the people around you hate it, I'm guessing you live in Melbourne or some equally Aids-ridden city.
