by 36 the economy was in the same place it was in 28, the great depression stopped around 35. There was a small period of stagnation in 38 which is why some people consider the great depression to go from 29 to 39.

Bullshit measure. Price controls and rationing make this a mess to begin with. It masks massive amounts of inflation (which would reduce GDP). Much of that new "GDP" consisted of tanks and bombs anyways.
Private consumption didn't start to increase until after the war, when all that public spending was slashed. Ordinary people's lives got worse throughout FDR's administration.
By your account, the USSR was about to become equally rich as the US in the 80s. If the government controls most of production and sets the prices, it's easy to boos GDP. That's not a meaningful economic measure.
