Opie & Anthony Show contract expires 10/01/2012 - Do you think they'll sign another contract or is this the end of O&A?

When they signed for another 2 years back in 2010, they voiced several concerns. As a listener, it doesn't seem like treatment from SiriusXM has improved at all. They aren't booking (or are blocked from booking) the big guests. Their studio hasn't improved. I don't think they're staying. :(

What do you think?

Opie has said repeatedly that he won't resign. Anthony has said that he'll continue if Jim and the others want to, but he can't imagine it without Opie.

Honestly, they could make more money going into just a freelance podcasting. Same basic drill, Anthony already has grade A equipment, so I forsee that happening if they don't resign.

They could make money podcasting together. If Opie thinks he will be successful podcasting alone he has a rude awakening ahead.

Opie hinted on Bob Kelly's YKWD Podcast (Episode "The Boys are Back 2012") that if he was to leave Sirius he would setup his own Podcast Network. Now that doesn't necessarily mean that he'd perform but at least he'd manage it and Opie has always been the business end of O&A and creator on the more spread out social innovations to the show.

They won't discuss the terms of their contract, but it seems like they're making at least a million. I don't think they could get that from podcasting.

Wrong. I forget which show this was, but it was only about a month ago. They had someone who ran a podcast (can't remember the name), he was discussing his financials and how much they make, O&A were bewildered, and I recall them specifically saying "Why aren't we doing that."

I take that as meaning whatever they're making, it is definitely possible to make more.

I belieeeeve you are referring to the Matt Paxton interview? Where he refereed to podcast that he runs? And the money that runs through his foundation? And his personal blog "5 Decisions Away"?

I just remember it wasn't somebody like Bill Burr or Robert Kelly. It was some guy who had his shit down and knew how to market himself, and that interview was about a month and a half ago.

Yeah, that sounds about right. O&A would definitely need to work some marketing, heh.

Carolla drives a $210,000 Mercedes, has a $61,000 Lexus on lease, Paul Neuman's old Datsun and lives in LA comfortably. I suspect he's healthily into the 7 figures and from what I can tell via research it's primarily driven by his podcast, which also promotes his books.

and yeah, I literally googled "how does Adam Carolla make money?" because as of yesterday I could not figure it out. It indicated to me, also, that Amazon.com is a gifuckinggantic cash engine.

I'll believe it when I see it. All the talk last time round was purely posturing for contract negotiations IMO. They have a very comfortable gig and it would be hard for anyone to walk away from.

The current environment at Sirius is poisonous to creativity. If they move on or get exactly what they want from Sirius I think it will be a huge win for the fans. If they stay on without making/getting big changes I can't say I blame them but I for sure wont be listening.

The last contract took them from a 5 year, to a 2 year on the same terms. In their position, i would extend for another 2 years at the same pay, but have some carve outs allowing then to introduce a visual element and a weekend podcast. In a couple of years, they will then move off satellite radio as they introduce other ways to reach their media. The truth is, o and a are not veterans of visual broadcasting and unlike Jim, don't have good visual presence.

However, I don't think they have adequate representation, and that would lead to the commissions disappearing from their agents future transactions.

With that said, the only way out would be a clean break. I'm therefore on the fence on whether they will extend...

they should be getting paid more. Especially Norton. Siri has used that show as an incubator for a huge amount of content, and they should be promoting their cheaper channels via the show, instead of god damned gold plated guinea roses. What a crappily run company.

I could not imagine how the show dynamic would change with Anthony hosting the three out of his home for a podcast. That dude seems to be to be seriously deluded about his talent level, of late, while basically phoning it in for 2-3 years now. Hell, Fez puts in more effort.

Speaking about ads, I've never understood why we have to pay for Opie and Anthony yet still listen to ads? I mean I get that the hosts need breaks, but shouldn't we be hearing Opie and Anthony production during those breaks instead of ads? What am I paying for?

you're paying for music and the satellite and the equipment. Channels with talent are supported by ads. That's what the majority of OnA's paycheck comes from, now, I think.

edit: once I was curious about the cost of that platform. I think there are 6-8 satellites now, between the two companies. I believe they have a lifespan of 15 years and cost around $11,000,000/ea in support and launch. It's not a cheap technology. Of course the next gen satellites will be markedly cheaper and we will need less of them since the two companies don't need separate systems.

This is the end.

They will renew. It's a cash horse, and Anthony has a pretty big mortgage (as I would imagine).

They make 1mm a year, and have 3mm houses, I think they're ok for now... Remember how Anthony used to spend, nothing like that this last year!

Lol Should be capitalized M = mille MM = mille mille Thousand thousand Million.

I feel like an asshole explaining myself. I think you can suck a bag of dicks for making me :)

Do they really live in 3m houses? Even adjusted to NY prices? I'm think half of that.

Purchased on 02/23/2006 for $2,925,000. virtualglobetrotting.com/map/anthony-cumias-house/

He got fucked. Probably worth half of that now.

It's worth about that now, but it was worth closer to 2 for most of the past 5 years

I guess this depends on your definition of 'the end of O&A', I think they'll continue in some form. I see a podcast network where they do a weekly opie and anthony show, then I could also see them each having a separate weekly show on the same platform. so that's three shows right there. Then they could start using the golden ticket again and bring in more shows. like SIR for assholes.

it was a promotion they did when they hit XM. They said they'd 'send word' to recipients of the golden ticket and they would get their own show on the channel, something that has almost completely died in the wake of the merger. Bill Burr had a show with Derosa called Uninformed, Lazlow had a show there, Bitch Management with Patrice, Bob Kelly and sometimes Colin Quinn show, etc..

[deleted]

no worries. any questions feel free to ask in threads. you'll usually get a pleasant answer from pests. heh.

Don't forget Ron & Fez. They were really the only ones that got a golden ticket. Sure, there were other shows, but nobody got paid for them.

Also, hearing a much different (read as: lively) Fez running into the studio yelling "HOLY SHIT, I GOT A GOLDEN TICKET!"

What I think the show really needs is new management (a.k.a the end of Gary). Countless times, there have been big issues and he has done nothing (the recent Cleveland debacle comes to mind) because he never experienced them running music channels.

But I really think its just SiriusXM in general, ESPECIALLY when it comes to marketing. Steven Singer can only do so much. And with what I can imagine is the target demographic, I agree with O&A 100%: why don't they have a freakin' beer sponsor?!?!

[deleted]

seriously? this do this every single time. think, please.

English, mutherfucker? Do you speak it?

Hank Hill Jr means they start acting like this right up to the re-sign date. It's a ploy to raise listener-ship, online debate and general traffic, while attempting to better position themselves for negotiation.

Like buying a new car, it's a cheap, but necessary ploy. I just wish it didn't start out nearly 18 mos ago. I'm ready for this and the current election cycle to be done already.

Recall the last go-round Opie refused to sign until they were basically banging down his door at home (wasn't it far past their date?). And he should have, they're getting paid garbage money.

They're crazy if they resign. Satellite radio is not going to be around much longer, and there's still lots of room for them to get in doing podcasts. They'll make less money, but they can actually pay their staff a living wage. 3 hours a day podcasting at whatever time of the day that they want, listen live with subscription, free download afterwards.

The option is there for them if they want it, but I don't know if they motivated enough to do it.

Yeah, that sounds about right. O&A would definitely need to work some marketing, heh.
