Chemically the end product is the same, but they’re produced using different solvents. The end result of both is that the base of the cocaine is freed from the salt form in which cocaine is naturally found, rendering a smokable form of the drug. Crack is actually a bit safer, because the solvents used for freebase are super flammable, and aren’t always removed completely, which isn’t exactly ideal for something you smoke. That’s how Pryor set himself on fire.
