the classic thing about star wars is that it should have/would have been just another schlocky B rated sci fi movie. He happened to stumble across characters that really made an impact and all the design people and fx people hit home runs with everything they created and the music brought it to another level. coupled with the merchandise powerhouse it also became - and there you have it, a gigantic IP.
