Like it doesn’t take away his ability to keep you entertained unless you just don’t like his personality. But that’s what makes him good to me. There’s not many actors that own being goofy like him.
It was a trip seeing him as a normal dad in We Need to Talk About Kevin, but it wasn't really a memorable performance (which is understandable given the performances and screentime of Tilda Swinton and Ezra Miller).

First film I saw him in was Boogie Nights. Then Gangs of New York. Guy can act but he is sorta trapped in his own goofiness.

Agreed. Maybe it's because I'm used to him in step brothers, but i can't take him seriously.

He is probably going to do more dramatic roles now that the Will Ferrell gravy train is over.

Sister Brothers didn't really stick the landing but if he continues to do roles like that, it seems to work.
