He’s a subversive wordsmith. It was intentionally said to be funny on different levels and to reveal a larger layered truth. The whole week of press was a Kaufman-esque troll job that exposed a lot that is wrong with our culture and media. And it worked. 6 months later, his name and show are still being mentioned. Can’t beat the publicity. At the risk of losing the show, he gave it a longer life. Otherwise, he would’ve done a week of boring press, only his hardcore fans would’ve known the show existed and the show would’ve been immediately forgotten, just another misfire in his career instead of being something that continued to build his legend.

You’re exactly right. I saw Norm perform live less than a week before that interview when he mentioned Louis and Rosanne came out. He had been publicly saying for a while that he doesn’t say “retard” anymore and that he replaced it w/ “Down Syndrome”. He literally referred to it as his “new word”. The idea that he got tripped up and it just slipped out is sincerely ridiculous and laughable.
Norm is a calculated genius and a brilliant wordsmith as you said. Anyone who thinks that they understand what’s going on behind the curtain w/ Norm Macdonald at any given time is a rube. He’s several steps ahead always.
