I don't want them to be utilities either, but there's good legal reason to complain about their behavior. A common carrier cannot ban on a whim. Publishers can. Social media sites claim to be common carriers to avoid legal liability for what users post, but they behave like publishers by selectively banning accounts. They should be held accountable.

Furthermore I question the "private" nature of these sites when the govt has become very involved. For example, Facebook gave The Atlantic Council a lot of power in deleting anti-establishment wrongthink from its pages. The Atlantic Council is essentially a taxpayer-funded war propaganda outlet, always fearmongering about Russia and trying to escalate the Syrian War. And Twitter seems very supportive of the new regime change plans for Venezuela, recently banning 2000 pro-Maduro accounts. Why is that?
