Just watched Brawl in Cell Block 99 and Bone Tomahawk, after not watching jack shit for years (even though I still claim to be an aspiring screenwriter).
Feel free to throw out some more recommendations. Movies from the last four or five years would be appropriate.
P.S: Maybe it's just because of what I've been focusing on recently, but did anyone else get the feeling Cell Block 99 was an unusually...'white-friendly' film? 'Working-class-friendly' too, even? 'Masculine'?
Either way, it woke me up to the possibility of what can be done again, unapologetically. I didn't realise how cynical I'd become about Hollywood.

Seen it. There's something odd about those US/UK crossover films - a clash of tones. There's always a gag involving a 'bobby', and there's always a scene with a mini cooper going the wrong way around a roundabout.

Raging Bull still holds up. What a great movie. One thing that stuck out to me besides the acting, was the set design. They came correct, not that I lived in 1940's Bronx or anything.

Here's my reliable list - the list of a film snob still living in the past:
Artistic/contemplative/Euro: Stalker, Solaris (Tarkovsky), Aguirre: The Wrath of God (Herzog)
Classic film noir: The Night and the City (1950), The Big Sleep (Bogey), The Killing (Kubrick). Just about anything from that period with Bogart. The Harder They Fall (1956) is a good film about corrupt boxing promoters. Also, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) is still insanely watchable.
There's this idea that only modern movies are experimental and daring; and that old movies were all dull and boring. That's a COMPLETE FUCKING PSY-OP! The filmmakers of today do almost always refer back to the classics for their ideas and techniques. Check out Cagney in Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye - it's one of those films that subverts your expectations at every possible opprtunity (and is unaplogetically, almost farcically Masculine).
Action: This is a highly underrated film genre, and without it I believe that we young men of today would be a hell of a lot more pussified. For many of us, the only time we got to see men of action, men of principle - heroes, was when we popped that VHS tape in and watched Sly, Arnie, Van Damme, et al, flex their muscles, kick ass, get the girl, ravage the girl, and walk off into the sunset to the vibrant tones of an 80s Yamaha synthesizer.
: Die Hard 1 and 3; Lethal Weapon movies; All Van Damme movies up until around 1996, especially Double Impact (no, that's not the Rodman one); Most sly pics barring the silly ones... Ach, I just realised I'm preaching to the choir by naming these. We all know the deal with this one.
Oh, also that category of upper-class 90s action films, with Harrison Ford using his brain instead of Van Damme using his legs. The Fugitive is the stand-out from this category.
Moving forward I would point to Nolan films like Memento, arthouse shit like Primer etc, but I think that's just me trying to look smart. The films I've named above are ones I genuinely enjoy.
No idea why I'm writing this. Maybe one of the younglings can learn from my ways.

Very, very fucked up. I'd just split with a woman who wasn't very clean when I watched it, so it amped up my paranoia. Nice sticking your dick in any random hole, stupid.
The actress, Amanda Fuller, was in another horror movie called Starry Eyes, which was really good. Thought she would have had a bigger career, but all she really did after Red, White, and Blue was small parts in garbage direct-to-dvd movies, and played one of Tim Allen's daughters on that rotten sitcom, Last Man Standing.

Watched Destroyer a couple of days ago, and that scratched a pretty deep itch for me. Very bleak cop dramas are my favorite kind of movie when they're done well and I thought that was done real well. Nicole Kidman's performance was pretty astonishing; you could almost smell her character's rotting stench off the screen her character was that pitiful
I'd also recommend Killing of a Sacred Deer, which also has Nicole Kidman. Even though it's probably not formally categorized in this genre I consider KoaSD the best horror film this decade.

I had been pretty hyped for it for a good few months when it had gotten some festival buzz. Kidman's "Charlize Theron from Monster"-esque performance and comparisons to To Live and Die in LA got my attention.
I was surprised my nearby theater was playing it this week as the place is usually a piece of shit. Its also playing The Favourite and I wanna see that too while I can as that shit will be gone real quick, i suspect. It only has an 11AM showing.
