By standing next to a ''beloved celebrity'' he demonstrates his inner wish to be similarly beloved and idolized as the ''victim'' standing next to him bored out of his mind. When Jim was fat(pic related) he constantly berated himself. Re was truthful , but still he cherished positive attention. That is normal , but all that ''spiel'' made him look disingenuous. Now it's the false positivity mixed with masked, (poorly )genuine fear of time running out on life lived in debauchery and self hate.
