No, but seriously, I wanted to punch a man child in the teeth over all the “I am shocked and saddened by the death of Stan Lee, the most important and influential person in my life...”
Yuck. Shut up. You’re shocked by the death of a 95 year old man who made comics when your grandfather was your age.
I don't totally agree with Maher's statement - like any form of media, there is niches that are for different age groups, and comics are no exception. Preacher is my favorite example to give - it's as anti-comic book as you can get, just a truly well written story.
BUT, where I do agree with him, is that a lot of guys my age have truly refused to grow up, and I do not know why. I know one guy, easily the most annoying one in our group, who's as into superheroes and Godzilla as his own damn kids, possibly moreso. The money he spends on the collectibles, and the clothes he wears to show it off... He's our Sam Roberts.
While I think a small degree of enjoyment of it is ok (life is rough, if little things help you enjoy it and it doesn't hurt anyone, who gives a fuck), the FERVOR of people like him, and the worship he exhibits towards something that, as Maher says, was created to sell to kids, is sickening. And I see it with so very many people around my era growing up: it's not nostalgia, nor appreciation. It's an obsession that takes away from important things and a distraction away from their real issues that they don't want to face as an adult in the real world.
Too many people here can’t see past the fact that Maher doesn’t vote with them. In every other way, he’s a real ass dude who defends comics, rails against political correctness, and calls out snowflakey shit as he sees it.
That being said, it’s possible to have a stable social life that includes members of the opposite sex, enjoy independent movies and documentaries, read Chaucer, Tolstoy, and Orwell, and still think that MCU movies are good and Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction are gifted writers even though their medium is comic books.
And it’s also possible to like comics, see the alert that Stan Lee died, think it’s sad and go about life normally. The outpouring of grief on social media is the only part I’d call truly embarrassing.

Pretty much exactly how I feel. So much of it is so blatantly self-serving that you feel the really effusive ones have been anticipating it with drafted self-posts and cringe posts calling him the "architect of their youth" or some shit.
They don't really care about him, they just want the social brownie points. If they prove they're the most hurt by his death, they get to be the victim.
People that had a legit friendship with him - Kevin Smith, Craig Ferguson, Roy Thomas, John Romita Jr. - them I get. But the movie stars did not fucking befriend him, fuck right off.
preacher fucking sucks, it's not an anti comic it's just one of many try-hard edgy comics that has the same emotional impact as spawn. I've seen like 4 that are basically "what if its superheroes, but they're shitty."
I disagree but you're welcome to your view. Yeah there's some 90's edginess because, well, that's when it was written, but there's a big heart in that book that I loved. And the ending was better than I expected.
"Personally, I’m grateful I lived in a world that included oxygen and trees, but to each his own. Now, I have nothing against comic books – I read them now and then when I was a kid and I was all out of Hardy Boys. But the assumption everyone had back then, both the adults and the kids, was that comics were for kids, and when you grew up you moved on to big-boy books without the pictures."
He's right, though. Don't totally agree on his assessment of comic books, but t's not like Stan Lee didn't rip off other creators in his lifetime (Steve Ditko, Jack Kirby).
I'm not listening to the pigs that claimed he was a misogynist or whatever.

Why should anybody feel sorry for somebody who dies in their 90's? I really don't feel sad about anybody over 80 who dies.

Armie Hammer got his ass chewed fit pointing out people making Lee's death about themselves, and he's absolutely right.

It's the other side of the fake outrage coin.
