I'm fascinated about the whole national blind spot we had about this guy. We all heard the rumours. They were punchlines all the time. He was a creepy fucker regardless of the whole child rape stuff yet he was a genuine national treasure for some reason.
Im a Yank so i dont know much about him but i heard he dropped a LOT of money to charity and brought in so much money to BBC that no one wanted to start digging
In the UK you have to pay a license to get TV legally so the popularity of stars has little to do with it money wise ( although most the most watched shows are on the BBC). So its not like its a cash cow if he was on a advertising funded channel.
He didn't personally give much to charity but was a fundraiser doing charity runs and the like. Even still just because you built a spinal hospital I don't see a doctor or nurse being okay with you fucking kids.
Remember when Michael Barrymore used to be a big "family entertainment" star on tv? Then some young guy who had been fucked to death was found floating in his pool at one of his drug fuelled gay orgies? John Leslie? Rolf Harris? UK tv has had its fair share of active creeps and none of them are really that surprising. To be honest I was surprised that Cliff Richard was found innocent and that the guy who did Dame Edna wasn't exposed as some kind of perv.
It is odd. I think at a time of less radio/TV channels it felt like a 'big thing' to work on tv/radio (my dad's a BBC guy (non-famous)). It was widely know in 'in' circles, & even joked about on Radio1 in 1992 . I heard Chris Morris was told to lay off poking at Saville, although e managed to sneak-in a little jab on R1

Yea but for all of them it destroyed their careers. Savile got through everything as police only spoke to him shortly before his death

That's the kind of protection you can expect when you're a frequent guest at the royal family's lizard, baby sacrificing parties!
