I love the concept of this movie. The scene where Kevin Costner shows the mason jar of sand in front of the kids and they're mesmerized by it is annoying though
If they made it today it would be totally computerized and filmed in controlled tanks. They actually built elaborate floating sets and shot on the open sea. It’s always going to be an interesting artifact of a winding down era from that perspective. They could’ve done more to flesh out the details of life in that world, but the movie was more than serviceable as a post-apocalyptic, oceanic adventure.
I actually really like this film. Never got the hate. I mean it's not a masterpiece but if I see it on telly I always watch it. Also Jeanne Triplehorn is sexy.

That movie got so much unnecessary hate, most likely tied up with how huge a budget it had. I always liked it.

They were kinda frivolous. Like using special effects to touch up Kevin Costner's hairline and bald spot is a little insane.

That's that movie where Kevin Costner played a gay fish.

Waterworld? That's what it's like between a woman's legs when I walk in the room.

Even as a kid you felt like the movie didn't look as high-budget as it was. Entertaining, though.
