I honestly do not think I'm looking at the past thru rose colored glasses when I say this, I would take Opie at his worst over Sam at his best. Say what you will about Opie but he did contribute something to the shows greatness. Everything the guys from the show have gone on to do without him is a frantic fucking cluster fuck, which by its very nature, maintains some entertainment value. Sam on the other hand takes a cluster fuck and sucks out anything entertaining about it while simultaneously injecting an aversive element to it. I'm glad to say I have only heard clips from Jim and Sam, haven't paid for Sirius in years, and that fucking show honestly is the most depressing, lackluster dog shit I've ever heard. I'm sure Sirius has coached Sam (like Opie) to try and put more emphasis on youtube viewership. Problem is that while the occasional youtube video may do well, that viewership doesn't translate to the main program. Case in point, see Conan O'Brien. His bits on youtube do great, but his late night show is tanking in the ratings. It's so bad that his show is being cut to half an hour.

The way Sam acts now, despite the hate for him getting louder and more consistent, is due to equal parts is low intelligence and his incredibly detached/self-unaware vision of himself. He sees himself as the Future Howard Stern. He still thinks that he's young, despite his awful looks and his window of opportunity having been missed. He still thinks that he actually earned a spot on the air through verbal talent or comedic ability.

At times, you can hear it in his voice when he tries to play snooty. Whenever he tries to "one up" someone. Whenever he questions the conduct of another person. Whenever he makes attempts at voices or impressions. He is far too comfortable in that chair in front of that microphone for someone who should be wholly uncomfortable in their own skin 24 hours a day.

His whole schtick is based on "picking apart" other people and their logic, yet he has no leg to stand on in his own life with the embarrassing shit he does and defends.

Howard Stern was abused all his life and his success came from honing his own verbal and mental ability to decimate others. Sam Roberts was pampered and coddled and has honed absolutely nothing as a result, so he needs to use weak insults towards others as his crutch. He's a complete nothing.
