The first time I ever met people who didn’t know how to play Spades, or never heard of it, was when I went to college with extremely sheltered white people from the Midwest. The same people who were always nervous off campus even when in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, I’d try to explain that one apartment in the neighborhood cost more than every house in their small town but they didn’t seem to understand. Even the most racist of racists old school Italians in Brooklyn knew how to play Spades.
