James Beck Gordon (born July 14, 1945) is an American musician and songwriter. Gordon was a popular session drummer in the late 1960s and 1970s and was the drummer in the blues rock supergroup Derek and the Dominos. In 1983, in a psychotic episode associated with undiagnosed schizophrenia, Gordon murdered his mother and was sentenced to 16 years to life in prison.
Can someone school me on this guy. As I understand it he was buddies with Merchant/Gervais and was always kind of their punching bag. Was he in on the joke or not? Was he completely oblivious that he was a joke? Or is he a genuinely funny dude that knows exactly what he's doing? I've only listened to a few clips and from what I remember it would be him saying something dumb and the other guys just laughing hysterically at it. From what I recall I did find it funny but I just never took the time to deep dive. Anyone wanna fill me in!
There's no way its a act. I know plenty of people like him. He's got a wit about him and a dry sense of humour for sure but some of it is clearly straight from his stupidity or weird understanding of the world.
The xfm shows are mad but hilarious. The podcasts are strong too. Being a fan of them and seeing it build to a idiot abroad was great. Never laughed so hard in my life.
Damn really? At Idiot Abroad or the sxm show? I guess this month I'll just be watching and listening to shit that I somehow missed recently. Been binging the American office lately and now I'm gonna start checking out Karl's projects
I feel like they had taken it off when I looked for it the other day. I watched it on YouTube but the quality was awful, much better to watch it in HD.
He's a lot like Patrice in that just the way he looks at the world is funny and unique. Throw him any topic and he has something hilarious to say about it, but in an idiot savant kind of way. He's a cross between Patrice and Bobo.
It's hard to tell but at first sight I'm not feeling this. I just hope it's not another Gervais style thing with a sweety pie tone and a disgustingly emotional turing point. Derek and Life's too short were horrible.
I hope it's 90% unscripted because his rants and points of view are great. I was actually thinking of Karl lately when I came across some Conan bits with an employee who's a complete weirdo too but American (and then they turned it into a bit): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Auh74d_OG8Y

It has to be better than that Derek piece of shit.

Ricky has nothing to do with this. Karl is credited as the writer for the whole series.

I think it has become apparent over time that Gervais really needs Merchant
1 TriangleDimes 2018-07-07
Merchant's show is pretty good
1 Papalazarous 2018-07-07
yeah, it was alright. better than any of the gervais solo stuff.

Did you see “Special Correspondents?” Brutal
1 Papalazarous 2018-07-07
unfortunately I did. Not as bad as the David Brent film though. That was fucking horrendous.

couldn't get more than half way through
1 imcrapyall 2018-07-07
Thats why Ricky is still known for The Office and Merchant is writing and directing for The Rocks studio.

Karl was the only funny and talented one out of that whole crew

Nah all three were cracking during the XFM days, smerch especially. Now though? Yeah probably although I didn't watch smerch's show
1 ClownShitExpress 2018-07-07
OG S-Merch's show was clever and well written.

Karl isn't talented, he just is. This show looks shitty though. He can't act for shit.

Yeah, asking Karl to follow a script is retarded and pointless. It's the same reason why scripted movies and tv shows about rock 'n roll always suck.
1:26 and a grand total of 1 ok-ish joke.
No sale.

But he wrote the script

Don't like how they made his aunt American and 'kooky'
Mind you she did wear a kaftan and have a fanny ( cunt) like a split tennis ball in real life.

With the much sampled drumbeat from famous mother-murderer Jim Gordon.

Curb & Louie had 2 completely different styles

You don't get it, man. This is like the Three Stooges/Nightrider.
1 shimshammcgraw 2018-07-07
Yeah dude. In the same vein as The Wire/Hogans Heroes.
1 PeesaG 2018-07-07
Neither of which are like this.
1 WestStarKinger666 2018-07-07
Those 3 were Comic Gold. Karl is a wonderful free thinker in a world of know-it-all pseudo-intellectuals like Ricky. This does look Great!
1 TheDreidelMan 2018-07-07
Doesn't look that great.

Xfm. A old London station. They are only about a hour long each as they had to play songs.
Then they did podcasts.
Then a idiot abroad.
Then Karl did the moaning of life solo.
Should be lots of it on YouTube but the best way to do it is in order as the show slowly becomes more abs more about Karl.
Save the TV' shows for once you know what Karl is like. The added context makes it even funnier
1 maynardsabeast 2018-07-07
You know if the show is still on Netflix? I used to always see it but never watched

It was removed from netflix and moved to Hulu and last time I checked a couple weeks ago its not on Hulu anymore unfortunately.

I have all the xfm shows and the podcasts after, and the specials if you want. You can also torrent them.

He "acts" a lot more stupid and odd than he is. He breaks character and laughs a lot at his own shtick a lot. He's hilarious though.
