ok...black, tarry, stool is a sign of bleeding in the upper GI tract. it can also be caused by certain food dyes, though the stool won't be tarry, just black. Bismuth Subsalicylate (the active ingredient in pepto bismol) will turn your stool black as well. Other foods that can cause this include licorice, dark chocolate, blueberries, cranberries, grape juice, foods with red dye and iron-rich foods (meat, prunes, tofu, oysters, kidney beans, raisins, molasses).
The way to know fo' sho' if you're bleeding is to do a fecal hemoccult test. You can buy one from Amazon, or your health care provider can provide you with one (usually for a nominal charge). Let me know!
I'm on a bunch of medications and it causes me to only have diarrhea once a week as opposed to regular bowel movements. Is there any way to fix that or am I screwed because of my medication. I take Prestique (sp?) vyvanse, neurotin and latuda. Sorry to hijack the thread.
