Jim said this morning that a 14-14 record (0.500) is pretty good and above average for a UFC fighter... given his role as co-host of a UFC podcast, I'm dubious of this claim.

MMA is not like boxing, so having 5 losses for a champ would not be uncommon. Almost no one is undefeated. Having an even record is not average though.

The sport is constantly changing, a lot of the top guys are veterans who have improved drastically, and you don't have as much freedom to duck tough fights like boxers do.
Once you're in the UFC, you fight whoever they put in front of you, or Dana calls you a pussy on twitter and buries you in the Facebook prelims until you fall in line.

Does Dana White have any fight experience? Is he a former amateur who got smashed senseless like Spinner Dunn? Or is he just another tough-talking, soft-walking (((businessman))) bully?
3 rahtin 2018-04-06
Dana was a boxer, don't know if he went pro, but he says he wasn't great.
He's definitely not a pussy though.

Hm okay. So long as he's not another Gary Bettman, a sniveling member of the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, despite never having played a single sport in his entire life.

According to Rogan he also promoted boxing in Boston for years after he quit boxing himself, then started managing Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell.

He taught boxercise classes to women

I agree with the first half of your comment

He was a boxercise instructor.

There are really only 3 scenarios where people have .500 records in the UFC and they are, 1) If you're Conors bud like Arten Lobov is 2) If you're Mark Hunt and have been around forever and have KO power and 3) WMMA. In conclusion, Jim Norton is a little twirp who knows nothing.

Isn't an even record average by definition?

Depends what kind of "average" you are using.
1 mayomayomayomayomayo 2018-04-06
The average where you sum up all wins by all fighters and divide by the number of total fights. Counting draws as a half win, its always 0.5. What other averages are there?
1 David_Tosk 2018-04-06
Median. Which makes more sense here.

He got most of the surrounding details around the Conor incident this morning wrong as well. He doesn't really know a whole lot about MMA or the UFC, which is odd considering it's his job.

That's because he's turned on by the thought of being sexually dominated by fighters. They're everything he's not so for some reason that turns him on.

They asked for xxl cup of smoothie

i’m starting to think he never even watches the sport outside of fights he got free tickets to. he’s a fan because it’s something to do on saturday night sometimes.
1 chickenfan1 2018-04-06
well no its not, but also it always matters who you fought AND when you fought them.
styles make fights, matchups make careers

The Best of the Best of MMA is what the UFC is. Not having a winning record USUALLY means being cut from the UFC. Norton is a black belt in Ignorance.
1 late_50s_why 2018-04-06
He does own a pride fc t shirt hate on him all you want h8rs
1 Dagidugidai 2018-04-06
well - if someone loses every time someone wins it's literally average. In a 0 sum game the average can't be anything more or less than .5
4 sjeffiesjeff 2018-04-06
That would be true if everyone fought their entire career in the UFC. 0.500 is horrendous for a ufc fighter.
2 GullibleGilbert 2018-04-06
but what if both contestants decide not to fight but settle their argument with words?
thats a win for both in my book!
2 KennethFresno 2018-04-06
No one else in the UFC is .500 or below so no he is not an average fighter.
1 peckaface 2018-04-06
CM Punk?
1 OpiesMammogramResult 2018-04-06
And the guy who CM Punk is fighting next.
1 rahtin 2018-04-06
On average, human beings have less than 2 arms.
1 thebedshow 2018-04-06
Lots of people lose their first 2 and never have another fight
1 Canadia86 2018-04-06
People with those kinds of records can usually be found in Bellator
1 FightOrSmite 2018-04-06
14-14 is a shit record for a UFC fighters. Unless you’re a mma legend or some shit like that.
2 rahtin 2018-04-06
BJ Penn is close. 16-12.
But he's from the "I'll fight anyone" days, and he was almost always at a size disadvantage.
2 FightOrSmite 2018-04-06
Proving my point. Legend and UFC hall of famer.
1 just_a_mean_person 2018-04-06
A good chunk of those losses are also after he should have hung it up for a while.
1 Bobby_Newpooort 2018-04-06
Outside of a few heavyweight exceptions and the women in newer divisions, that's incredibly rare for a UFC fighter to have a .500 record
1 TazStyles 2018-04-06
It isn't good or above average, Artem Lobov is only in the UFC because Conor got him in, he was on TUF lost his first fight and was kicked of the show another fighter who had won his fight got injured and Conor got Artem back on the show, Artem ko'ed 3 guys to make it to the finals where he lost but was given a contract.
His record is 13 wins 14 losses 1 draw 1 no contest his UFC record is 2 wins 4 losses
One of the reasons he has so many losses is that he would take short notice fights at weight classes he shouldn't be fighting at, another reason is he's pretty much just a one dimensional brawler.
So yeah Jim doesn't know very much about MMA.
1 late_50s_why 2018-04-06
He did fuck up that jap it was funny stuff
1 redtrilobal 2018-04-06
To be fair look at BJ Penn's record. And he's a legend.
1 late_50s_why 2018-04-06
Anyone with a double digit loses in MMA is not worth watching
