Desperation stinks, socially. That's why you avoided that desperation from the weird kid in middle school. It's an awkward time. But everyone goes through it, and willingly adjusted people find their way. Yes, you can feel bad for them, but they're supposed to get that worked out eventually. This is not the case, as it has not happened yet. He's reaching an age where some of his "peers" are actually dying from old age. If understanding basic unspoken human interaction hasn't been learned yet, it's a lost cause - Still believing you're right, everyone else is wrong, people LOVE you (seriously!), then just ride that on out. Also, never attaining any sense of an "identity", a "Who I am", while forever running to "Who do they want me to be" is a sign that you'll always be dealing with a mannequin of their actual not-self.
