You can't be a hip, accessible and relatable talk host when you're in your 60's, watching reality TV shows, kissing the ass of hollywood elite and devoid of your former age.
Oh wait, he's been that way since his 50's, too.
Damn shame - those 90's shows still stand as the best radio I've ever heard, short of peak Ron and Fez.
I have a most of the 90’s shows torrented and it holds up incredibly well. The only thing that I don’t like is when he whines about bad press or his bosses. Ironically, that’s the part of his show Opie decided to copy.
I always just figured it was his go to when he needed to fill time, and over the years he started believing the things he was saying even as he became richer and more successful
Very possible. Even now, it's obvious how oblivious he is to his own audience - he'd do the "You don't like it, don't listen!" when people would tell him it's gay to talk about American Idol.
And yet, I hear stories about how nice the guy is away from camera's and mic's. He's a complex motherfucker, and I don't like him like I used to, but I appreciate the humor he helped push. Boundaries are meant to be pushed.

Sometimes I wonder how much of a put on that was with Howard, defending his brand and anti-hero status, or if he legit was just think skinned.
Time has made me think the latter.
