This is revisionist history, about her career suffering. Her sitcom was a hit for a few years, but the ratings were plummeting before she came out, then went up around all the hype, only to plummet again in the next season. She blames Disney for not promoting it on political grounds, but there’s no basis for that. More likely, people just lost interest. No skin off her twat though; CBS gave her a sitcom a few years later, which bombed and was cancelled mid season, but two years later she had a lucrative syndicated talk show deal that is on its 15th year, with Ellen making over $70,000,000/year. I wish I could be so brave.
Absolutely. And sure, gays were way less mainstream 20 years ago, and more openly derided but a) lesbians don’t really count and b) most of her audience knew she was gay the whole season leading to her coming out episode, which got huge ratings, and only fell off the following year when, as you say, it got boring and played out. So that just doesn’t square with this Rosa Parks style heroic brave story, no matter what some Christian groups said at the time to pressure advertisers—if the ratings stayed good, she wouldn’t have been cancelled.
her sitcom was never a hit. It was just on. They always wanted it to be good or popular, but it never was. They desperately wanted her to be the female Seinfeld - observational, disconnected, cynical, neurotic but likeable enough etc., and often dismissed her as a Seinfeld copycat. But it never worked. It was probably because she was a lesbian pretending to be straight and you always got the sense that something was off about the show. They weren’t letting her be who she was whereas Seinfeld was being exactly who she was. So the show was failing and the lesbian thing became kind of a Hail Mary publicity stunt to save a failing show. It could have been liberating for her and the show, but it was network tv so instead it was strapped down by sappy cornball sitcom conventions. If the show reinvented itself to allow her to be the way she portrays herself now on the talk show, then her sitcom may have had a more successful second life. Instead it came off as just another whatever 90s sitcom that would have been forgotten if she didn’t come out in the end.
I remember when that happened. Her shitty show became suddenly culturally significant, the only reason she is where she is now is cause she's a lesbian. She's completely unremarkable.
Neal is fucking terrible. He's a funny writer, but a shit comic and one of the most boring human beings in the entertainment industry Ive ever heard of.
I don't know what it is, but so many talk show hosts have reputations for being complete tyrants and just horrible to work around. Even stranger, the nicer someone appears to be, the worse they are. (Rosie O'Donnell) Ellen has one of the worst reputations in Hollywood, just an absolutely miserable cunt, from what people say.

He got an $89m stock bonus in August.
1 wifflebb 2018-01-27
Not including his $89m stock bonus?
1 PhilipMarma 2018-01-27
Oh yeah, not including that. Although that $89m was a ten year incentive...but still.
1 wifflebb 2018-01-27
No it was for a three year performance target and he still has more than $500m in unvested shares.
1 wifflebb 2018-01-27
A singular, anecdotal outlier case is all the evidence I need. Case closed!

I think people mostly got sick of her show because after she came out every episode was about being gay and it just got too repetitive and boring.
