I found the answer, kind of. It's generally attributed to a 1950s Bugs Bunny cartoon in the comedic sense but could go back as far as the 20s since crickets were always used to depict night scenes which was carried over from radio to television.

I was going to say something stupid like "I remember Billy West doing his own cricket noises into the microphone in the early 90s" but actually filling my mind with this knowledge has allowed me to start the Thursday off on the right foot
