3 for really heavy lifts in my experience. one on both ends of the bar and one behind. the extra 2 dont seem to be doing anything. but perhaps they figured that since he's lower to the ground if he failed the lift they might have less time to react so they had 2 extra guys there. 550lbs is no joke on a failed lift like that.
