No one was even pretending to like him anymore unless he paid them, he had an Unfunny streak running for about 50 years that he was starting to realize wouldn't be ending anytime soon, and he started getting vibes from management during contract negotiations that they didn't care as much as they used to.
It was his desperate flailing to feel important or significant in some way, because he didn't have anything left.
