Yeah he's a bit much....but peoples reactions to him made it very watchable. I enjoyed it. I had watched man on the moon fairly recently too so that helped.
I refuse to watch. I saw him on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee and felt really bad for him. He seemed like a hermit living alone in his head for way too long. Just seemed like he needs to get back out in the real world and have friends and family bust his balls and snap him back to reality.
seemed like a hermit who has lived alone in his head for way too long. Just seemed like he needs to get back out in the real world and have friends and family bust his balls and snap him back to reality.
Great doc. It was apparent to me that Crazy Jim, at the height of his power and influence, just took advantage of a free license to be obnoxious for the duration of filming under the guise of character inhabitation. His behind-the-scenes antics were a greater tribute to Kaufman than the movie itself.
I fucking hate people doing prank/performance "art" shit, like Andy Kaufman reading a book on stage or Joaquin Phoenix growing a beard and acting weird on letgerman, pretending to be a rapper.
Stop trying to be instrifuing and "shock people into consciousness", nobody cares. They try to act aloof and above it all but they're going to the effort to go out and do this shit, meaning they are emotionally invested in other people and they do care a lot. The worst type
of faggot.
He had some interesting ideas and funny moments. The problem is all the people who try to argue that he is one of the great comedians. He simply didn't produce enough truly funny content.
I don't care about "ideas" when I'm going to see a comedic performance. If it isn't funny, it's shit. What was his talent exactly? He just made a decision to be a faggot. There was no skill required.
i liked it. i like andy. like jim. can't wait to hear about some of the seedy shit that must be going on. you can't wear leather jackets when your girlfriend is found dead without there being some syd and nancy shit.
I like that movie, but I remember when it was coming out there were all these reports that he was "stuck" as Andy Kaufman, it was so embarrassing. He's still carrying on about it 20 years later, Jesus Christ. I never liked that guy past In Living Color. (Jamie Foxx either, honestly)
He completely blew an attempt at turning Im Dying Up Here into any sort of legit on screen version too, fuck him. I heard him on the Norm MacDonald podcast and he was so obnoxious I tapped 20 minutes in.
If a mugger wandered on-set during the bts footage to hold him up at gunpoint, something tells me he would’ve reacted like the real Jim an dropped the bit. Crazy guy doing a crazy troll job while hangers-on created a mythos about his dedication to the role.
Yeah, exactly. Real people go to work every day, brain surgeons go in and save people's life, and this faggot is "haunted" by a movie role he did in 1998 or whatever it was. Shut up.
It was a tough watch because I grew up on Ace Ventura, Dumb & Dumber, etc. He was such a cunt to all his co-stars and people on set it became uncomfortable to watch
I just finished it and I turned around after the ending. Listening to Jim say, "after I stopped being Andy I was left with myself...the same depression and pain that I had been covering with a mask..."
He goes on to talk about how he realized that he had accomplished all his dreams (fame, money) and it still left him empty inside. Life is irrelevant and he's made peace with dying
Humanized Jim and put his weird artsy projects that followed into perspective.
It's always perplexing when really talented and successful people sabotage themselves because they can't appreciate their qualities or accomplishments. It also seems like most of the really gifted comedic entertainers of our time were nightmarish messes in their personal lives. The duality of the sad and happy clown faces is really true!
I don't find it perplexing. More relatable really. But I'm one of those assholes that could be miserable with a bank full of lottery winnings.
I see Jim Carrey as someone who obtained his (and many others) ultimate dreams and realized it was all bullshit and meaningless. But he found a peace to it all.
He really thinks he became Andy Kauffman. It's called acting you ego maniac. No one actually becomes the people they're pretending to be and the fact that you needed therapy afterwards only shows you to be a sad freak with a tenuous grip on your identity.
I enjoyed the part where he was talking about his father being a musician who decided to play it safe and become an accountant only for his family to end up homeless. That you can just as easily fail pursuing your compromise as you can you chasing your dream so theres really no point not to. It probably only had an impact because im a non achiever lurking on a reddit page of a show i enjoyed in my youth when i had my life infront of me and did nothing with it. Thumbs up!
He pretty much admitted he's out of his Fuckin skull, he got real cringey at times. He showed no pride in his movies and in a nutshell he pretty much said he hated all of it

He's too good for this sub. He can afford to buy a low-tier soundbar.

I listened to that Norm show, it kind of shattered any idea I had of an actor I used to like

I saw the menu preview the other day and it reminded me of listening to the comedians talking about the craft.
