Yeah i thought that could have been the spark, but this really wasnt good enough. Look at how he demolished dave "tedious" smith. We are owed more opie ruining than this, there is so much they have only hinted at.
He usually holds off on Opie because he likes using him for Chip material. Whereas it wouldn't have made sense for Chip to talk about Dave since he didn't exist in the Chip universe. Also SXM may have told him not to make bashing him a central part of the show, or they don't want to give him the satisfaction of saying "See, they have to talk about me to get anybody to care about their show", although he's already said that.
