The first time Chip made a throwaway mention about Jim wanting to commit suicide (can't remember which episode) Anthony seemed genuinely bothered by it and showed emotion, which is super rare for him. Jim is just being a comedian: he sees that something he said got a big reaction, and so he continues saying that kind of thing and successively exaggerating it in order to keep getting that same reaction. Except in this case the reaction is not the audience laughing but rather his best friend showing care and concern, which is so rare that he has to make suicide threats to see it.

I don't think this sub affects Jim Norton's life that much... at most it gives him a good barometer for what kind of inside jokes/Opie bashing fans will appreciate. He's not a Dave Smith type pussy who actually is affected by idiots on the internet. I think he's always had depression and suicidal thoughts, the only question is why he would be talking about it more nowadays.
