There is a YouTube video called Sals first appearance. He literally called in the show and pranked Gary a bunch. He was a stockbroker. He joined the show once Howard got rid of Stuttering John and put on a contest. Sal and Richard won their jobs. They did a bunch of funny shot for awhile . Then they got old and boring and Howard started sucking. The end.
I think it happened after Jackie left. That left a lot of money for the show to play around with. Some went to Artie and I think some went to Sal and Rich. I know they took more trips (like to Vegas) too with the rest of it. Jackie was making a ridiculous amount before he left.
I wasn't listening regularly at that time. Sal used to call in with jokes and songs about Gary (busting his balls and stuff). So I think that was "proof" he could contribute. Not sure about Rich. I know a lot of people that like the two of them so I guess they contribute.
And, yes, you're overthinking it. We're all on a subreddit about a dead radio show. We all are overthinking things.
The contest: can you be funny on the show. Sal came to the studio on one occasion just to call Gary a horse toothed jackass, monkey and give him dental hygiene products. Sal also hates blacks - I wonder how he would do with Ant.
Click in around 7:40. Before then is all monotonous Howard ball-licking. For all O&A's faults, at least he didn't make the show a perpetual competition for who loves and reveres him the most.
