I'm not a lawyer, but it from a quick Google it looks like she gets it, and alimony, from the get-go. The court's supposed to arrange alimony with the aim of helping the spouse get back to being self-supporting - but given that Nia hasn't really worked, ever, as far as I can see - potentially Bill could be paying her off til she dies.

Again, I'm not a lawyer, but having read a couple of articles on California's alimony rules, it doesn't make a good God-damn whether the kid's Bill's or not. Remember, we're talking alimony and the division of assets, not child support. At best, he doesn't have to fund little Patrice's college/bail/appeals; but he still has to keep Nia afloat until she can support herself (I.E. forever).
