"A bong hit? Jeeez...how high are you...?"

THIS is the exact point where it started to unravel for Opie. Not just because Jimmy was emotionally checked out, but that the very thin veil he tried to pull over our eyes since Ant's firing -to maintain his own narcissistic ego- was yanked off like a bandaid. There could be no mistaking it now: Opie ended O&A because Opie is IMPOSSIBLE to have a relationship with. He is where he is now because of himself...NOWHERE.

This event is now known as the Esther Coup De Grâce.

Should have just gone with "Esther Coup"

Her laugh sounds like someone twirling a groan tube.

Imagine if Opie was just a normal, secure guy with a sense of humor who wanted to put on a good show. The show would have been so much better

Yup. He never had to be on a par with everyone else in the room. All he needed was the sensibility of a fan and a touch of humility.

Also if he didn't do so many different things that all already know

He actively fucked up the show.
If only he was passively bad no one would care. Most people aren't funny. Plenty of people have poor social skills. He really could have been the captain of the ship in the background, who sets up the funny guys and keeps the show on track.
But it was his constant needy desperation and try-hard'ing that made it constantly uncomfortable. He had to always make it about himself, often acting like he was better than Ant/Jim and they were just his employees, subordinate to his great talent.

Early Opie is often like that. Shutting up, making decent quips, laughing at his own bombs, talking like a normal guy. This transformation took years, and was really accelerated by having a kid.

... the show would still be on the air.

I like to fantasize sometimes about how the show would have been great and popular if only Opie decided to carry his weight and get talent.

As pathetic as it might be I listen to it at least once a month as well. It’s like The Godfather in that I can quote all of my favorite parts throughout the whole thing.
ME: I have friends that I talk to a lot! I talk to a lot.
Jim: Yeah? I’m sure you do...
1 Every1ShouldBKilled 2017-11-04
ME: In all fairness; you don't look at me either...so that's what, but... HOLD ON! So now that's on me?!
1 dumbshowreference 2017-11-04
ME: Because I feel like... you don’t give a fuck about me.

Truth is I needed you that day, period.
1 Mikekekeke 2017-11-04
I would have came in my pants if Jimmy responded "Well, we're not that close" to the "I needed you that day".
1 dumbshowreference 2017-11-04
Holy shit! That would have been epic.

Opie sounds like such a Little child in this. Esther: will you tell me? Opie : ...no!...
1 DildoBaggins75 2017-11-04
"Cringe" is an overused word, but when Opie hurled out that line I fucking cringed. He stinks.

1 dmix 2017-11-04
Trying to Larry David the moment, but with desperation instead of humour

The two instances that stand out in this spat... Opie says Ant "did things" behind the scenes that he "can't talk about". Jim tells him he doesn't know what Ant did, yet Opie won't tell Jim because "their not that close." Conclusion? Opie isn't sure if Ant actually did these things that he repeatedly says is fact. So telling Jim specifics could give Jim grounds to disprove or refute the allegations so he won't tell him. This is so childish. Then after telling Jim he isn't close, he turns around and accuses Jim of not "being there for him that day". Well why would he be if you're not that close? Not to mention Opie refuses to admit he resented Jim and Ants on air chemistry. My Opie hate is renewed hearing this again.
