I think at this point, Jim listens as little as possible. Jim can't riff with Sam's constant Adam Sandler references and knows he won't hear interesting conversation on any topic so he just stays on his phone putting in as little effort as allowed.
A dumb, soon to be cannon fodder negro educated in the Jim Crow-era South has the same level of book smarts as a privileged white kid from Westchester in the 21st century. Way to go, Mr and Mrs Roberts.
