I saw a good theory once, that the problems started when the people who grew up watching The Simpsons started writing for The Simpsons, so they already had a notion of what the show was. That, and the fact that everyone is stuck in time (more or less) requires constant retconning which really fucks things up for the people who have been watching it a long time. The first version of how Homer and Marge started going out was way above and beyond the reconned 80's version of the story.
Which is why King Of The Hill, will always be better in my book. They allowed the characters to grow up and evolve.
King of the Hill still blows me away. not only was it a pretty sophisticated for a cartoon, but it had growth and continuity that most sitcoms still don't have. that said, there's still a good amount of total shit episodes but hey you can't win em all
seriously. my favorite part is that it's somehow necessary that it was animated, but they never indulged in anything cartoony or unrealistic. it could have been a live action show, but somehow it would've suffered
Yeah, the last few series - and final episode - were all really disappointing because they abandoned the character development aspect of the show.
I watched all of the episodes, from the first season to the last, a few years ago and really noticed it so I looked up what happened: apparently the network decided - around season 9/10(?) that the writers needed to stop the character development because they wanted to show the episodes out of order, and have them still make sense.
Hence why Kahn Junior basically disappeared in those final few seasons, and the show sucked generally.
wasn't production on the last 3 seasons shelved and unshelved like 100 times? they kept deciding that animation was too expensive, or they'd just hold a season for an extra year. some of the show runners stepped away towards the end for other projects too
Jim's downfall was that awful advice show he had... he lost a little weight and felt qualified to give idiot callers (who were mostly lying ex. "my wife wants to have a 3-some what do i do?") His advice towards addiction is the famous "Yeah, it's rough man, I suggest going to a meeting"....... unfunny faggot
OPIE: Now, Jimmy, we don't have to be fawkin' enemies! We both want a morning show here.
JIM: (thinking) Why is Opie being so nice to me?
OPIE: And if you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours, Brothaman!
JIM: (thinking) Waitaminit, is he coming on to me?
OPIE: And if I was to slip a little somethin' in your pocket, burps, maybe just give you a taste, just a little taste, what's the harm?
JIM: (thinking) OH MY GOD, he IS coming on to me!
OPIE: After all, contract negotiations make strange bedfellows, heheh sniff
JIM: Sorry, Ope, but unless I pay for it, I don't go for these backdoor shenanigans! Sure, I'm flattered, maybe even a little curious, but the answer is no!

Brilliant. God I miss good Simpsons.

For me, seasons 4 through 8 are the golden years. If you have the FX NOW app you can watch any episode from any season.

What are you talking about? Seasons 12 to present era Simpsons is the only good comedy around anymore since King of Queens ended

It's astounding how little fan fare that show has. Best cartoon series of all time along The Simpsons seasons 2-8.

If it's a Cotton or Buckley episode, it's almost impossible not to suck.
1 wife_swamp 2017-10-24
lol I've got the whole series on...uhh.. on DVD. each episode on it's own disc. I deleted, sorry, "threw away" all cotton ep DVDs

1 lemskroob 2017-10-24
Has there every been a cartoon where the kids actually aged up over time?
1 Icon_Crash 2017-10-24
Well, there was King Of The Hill.
1 lemskroob 2017-10-24
he aged from 11 to 14 over thirteen seasons. Thats not quite 'aging'.
he should have been 24 by the time the show ended.
1 Icon_Crash 2017-10-24
Did I say real time?
1 lemskroob 2017-10-24
that was implied in my question.
1 Icon_Crash 2017-10-24
And how was I to infer that?
1 lemskroob 2017-10-24
the word "actually"
1 Icon_Crash 2017-10-24
Ok. So then my answer to what you implied. Very few cartoons are broadcast live, it's a terrible strain on the animator's wrists.
