I don’t know the stats but I don’t necessarily equate Catholicism with conservatism but I could be wrong. I look at Christian evangelist types as being tied in with the conservatives much more than Catholics. Almost everyone I grew up with was either Catholic or Jewish & as a Catholic myself I don’t see a strong connection between the religion & the Republican Party. There are Catholics who are liberal & ones who are conservative, I see this with my own large extended family (although the majority are democrats) & I see it with the hundreds of Catholic people I know. Even the pope seems pretty liberal on a lot of issues but with the born again Christian evangelists, they are almost across the board very conservative.

Conservative in the US usually means having traditionalist values and liberal/progressive you see less of that (typically). Hence neoconservative is having government force “good” values.
