Heard something very similar so I buy this completely. Breaking character for the second time tonight. Opie being delusional and paranoid is no longer just a character flaw or a bit, or something we like to make fun of him for, he is absolutely slipping and it's a legitimate mental breakdown. I know, I know, we are all supposed to hate them. But I don't. I actually do think this is heading in a terrible direction. The guy helped create something that made me laugh for 15 years - I don't want to see him go out like this. Notice Ant has taken some shots here and there, but hasn't unloaded and hasn't gotten specific. He's worried too.
I disagree...Opie has a massive ego and always has. He has always thought he's comparable to Stern in his prime and he should have been hired by some terrestrial station right away. It's not so much mental illness, as just his usual stupidity and shortsightedness. He has no clue that shock jock terrestrial radio is a thing of the past.
Agree, Opie is obsolete. No one wants or needs a "radio guy" to steer the ship, pace the show and press the right buttons anymore. Opie still sees himself as a top of the line radio personality, but he's the only one who does.
No one wants to sit and listen continuously to 4 hours of a radio show with 1 hour of boring ass commercials anymore. We would all rather listen to a podcast type of show where we can listen when we want and can start and stop. Technology more than anything has killed that type of radio. The only place it thrives is Siriusxm, and Opie sunk that in true dunderhead Opster fashion.
And on top of the fact that his main skills are now obsolete, there's the fact that his "humor" is entirely "shock jock" based cringe-type nonsense straight out of the early 1990s Stern playbook.
I could tell by the way people on racewars were treating him that something was up. His wife might of said something to people around him about it. Some of us a few years ago picked up on his mental illness and might have pushed a little too hard even after knowing his career was donesky.
Piss. Shit. Why I think Norton truly is a scumbag worm is that he turned on the guy that gave him any taste of the fame he so craves. Norton did nothing to keep Ant from being fired and dumped Opie as soon as Sirius and his manager told him the brand was officially dead.
I like to do things in threes. Sam and the rest of the staff are learning that Opie wasn't just the problem. Norton wasn't ever acting or doing a bit, he actually is a selfish prick. Jim is also a gullible idiot, but there are so many examples of this right down to the Roganesk fake smile he adopted.
I think I'll do the same and be my own armchair psychologist for a second.
My grandmother abused my mom and her siblings for most of their childhood. It was never outright abuse that left a mark, it was insane mental abuse that sounds literally like a horror movie. She kept up an outward appearance of this great woman, especially after my aunt attempted suicide (she remained in a psychological ward for the last 4 years until she was an adult by pretending to be insane. That was better than home).
Now, I love my mom, but she has issues. All of them do. Her older sister tried to kidnap my brothers because my mom is homeschooling them. My aunt has weird suicidal tendencies still, but she's a wonderful person. My mom flies into a rage at the drop of a hat. My mom has made considerable effort to change it, it's not easy. I've recognized weird rage tendencies in myself and have worked to change them.
Opie's talked on the show about his mom, and I have no reason to believe that he's lying. And I think that, as you get older, weird tendencies that you've worked to keep hidden rear their ugly head if you're not careful. Or it's genetic, either way, I don't think Opie fully realizes this. He's in complete denial that he's pretty much exactly how he described his mom. I'd like to think that I'm not an asshole, and I genuinely feel bad for Gregg. He's going off the deep end, hard, and he doesn't recognize it.
I was going to say something assholeish- but, I don't want to sound like a quesr or nothin', but I hope you and your family can work this stuff out. It's good that you have the self-awareness to address your shortcomeings and the empathy to accept them in your mom and her sisters.
I mean, we've tried, but with some of them there's nothing we can do but stop talking to them. We gave my grandmother and my mom's older sister plenty of chances, and they just blew them like they're Jim with a cheap tranny.
I am legitimately impressed that he managed to create something that is actually profitable. I honestly thought Compound Media would be done for in a year, but it looks like it'll continue to grow.
Anthony needs a better business manager, they need to spend a lot more energy reaching out to lapsed Stern fans. Since A&A is actually good, the potential to expand their subscriber base is actually really good
What's happening right now, is that there was an initial bump when the A&A show was announced, and there's been like a thousand subscribers added weekly, as more former Stern fans find out that Artie is doing a new show.
I actually believe this. I've seen other podcasts filmed in their studio including the black science man podcast. Sometimes the booth guys leave the live stream running and there is some stupid podcast running that nobody watches (usually made for random corporate shit) - clearly paying to rent the studio and staff.
B sounds like a half-decent idea and casts doubt on your whole post. If somehow crater face lucked into good business advice, keith would certainly fuck it up anyway.
If a bunch joined right when Artie joined the logical assumption would be they came from Artie's podcast especially if the amount that joined was similar to the amount Artie had subscribed to him.
1: I believe the bit about the side business, but if it's that profitable; then why raise the cost for subscription anyway?
2: Does your source know of any particularly strange interactions that stood out between Opie and Keith/Ant? Because it seems like it isn't cool between Opie and Ant again, considering that Opie flapped his gums about them offering 50% of CP to him. Ant's been taking very thinly veiled shots ever since...
3: Is there still a push to get Jim on the show or a part of CP?
1) To cover the expense of completely redoing the site and all streaming apps.
2) Opie being needlessly standoffish and shitty to people who were trying to throw him a lifeline and work out something that would be good for all of them.
3) Not unless Jim actually leaves Sirius XM.
ISIS would be embarrassed by their production values, but it would work for shitty foreign news remotes. The real value is in the Manhattan location and being able to undercut more established studio spaces.
How long until they loan their studio out to ISIS for a podcast? Furthermore, how long until Opie is holed up in a Vegas hotel suite, firing upon innocent victims, claiming they're all haters?

How long until they start renting to foreign shows and just not looking into what they're saying in other languages and before you know it, Antwan Kumiya just accidentally fed ISIS three years worth of propaganda news footage.
D) They legitimately tried to make it work with Opie against their own better judgement in an attempt to resurrect the brand, offered him twice a week co-hosting duties with Anthony and a morning show with him and cuban. After a bunch of extremely strange interactions with Opie they moved on, because they genuinely think he's lost his mind.
You left out the part where Ant offered Opie a pittance of what he is now offering to Artie...
u/CormacMcFarty: I think someone already asked this already, but did your source relay any REALLY frustrating experience between Opie and Keith? Just something the sub can run with and have a good laugh over...like something Opie said that made their eyes bug out like "WHO IS DIS NIGGA?"?
I remarked a while ago (when Keith and Opie had lunch at that diner) that Opie probably threw out a figure that made Keith choke on his mushroom burger. Hypothetical of course, but was there one distinct interaction that you know of that made them go: "OK, this guy is nuts"?
Don't hold your breath for any juicy details. Ants book is going to be about having an open and honest discussion about race and how come these burglar alarm commercials always show a white guy as the burglar, what the fuck. Ah!
I mean Artie was actually a decent hire for the short term because Stern fans are loyal as fuck to him and it was bound to bring in subs for now. It'll be interesting to see how many stay.

Meanwhile, unemployed Opie is tweeting Trump memes.

Opie could've had his own morning show matching what he making at Sirius right before they fired him. Opie turned it down because he's crazy.
