He came in with Fez to do the graveyard shift at WNEW and Opie & Anthony championing them when O&A had stroke for being a huge success got them to convince the station to give them evenings. And O&A's promotion of the show probably saved them from going the way of Don & Mike in New York.
He's not fond of Opie because of how he treated Fez, but Anthony always did right by Ron & Fez so he's always going to have a soft spot for him.
The fact that they didn't have a contingency plan for some of the guests not showing up says a lot, the whole show was basically awkward stalling with an anti-climatic ending, Anthony feels for some reason that he doesn't have to put any thoughts into his show, and Keith is borderline incompetent. Because he's used to not doing much prep for O&A. But he doesn't have the quality of people on the show to get away with shooting the shit and waiting for something great to be said so they can riff on that. There's no Norton, Patrice, Burr, Vos, Bobby, etc. He has Joe DeVito, Joe Matarese and Gino Bisconte for regulars.
If there wasnt such thing as Greggshells, and Opie were somewhat self aware of what an idiot he is and could take a beating like vos for being dumb. The show would have been infinitely funnier. Imagine them actually being able to call him out for and rightfully trash him for all the duds that came out of his mouth over the years. His sucking could have been funny for the show, instead his thin-skinned menstruating bitch attitude derailed almost all of the good bits.
The biggest problem is just how bad he is at hosting. Anthony by himself could save an O&A show with no prep sitting opposite anyone. When he's a guest on other shows, he's still funny as hell. But when he's the host, he's devoid of humor even if he's sitting across from Ronnie B and Norton. Maybe the lack of prep makes him nervous about what they're going to talk about, but even when they have topics lined up, it seems like 90% of his mind is focused on keeping the show running, and 10% is available to actually contribute anything worthwhile to the show.
I still think he's funny on the Chip podcast, LoS, Jim & Sam and things like the Fixing Joe show. Maybe he's a little less consistent, but I think the potential for him to be funny again is always clear.
I wish he just did a regular free podcast. I think the video element fucks him up too/adds pressure. Id love to know if he'd be doing better if it was free on iTunes like Rogan, just to know he'd have such a bigger audience and it would be so much less trouble to produce.
